COMMANDO WATERCOLOR
“ Get in and get out”
As the holiday season approaches, I am working on the finishing touches that will make each portrait present unique. Let me give you an example.........
I have a wonderful son-in-law, Bill, whose desire in life is to be a “Dad” and to bring up children with the love and support that he sees as essential for children. I wanted to make a portrait of him and his son, Russell, now 3. Russell's favorite place in the world is his father's shoulders. What better place to see the world from with the security that his Dad is holding him securely and lovingly!
The portrait has progressed well – but now comes the background – something dreaded by many painters of portraits – for that area of the painting can make or break the mood that you are trying to convey. The expression on Russell's face explains his feeling about being carried on his Dad's shoulders – so I could add a window in the background or some foliage, or a busy scene. NO – not personal enough!
What do I know about Bill that makes him the man that he is? I know that he is:
What could I put in the background that would convey this strength and foundation?

I think a very light flag - “one nation under God” - a motto he lives by. Think that I will work on that today!
